Chest Freezers
When it comes to high-volume, cost-effective frozen storage, the humble Chest Freezer remains an industry favorite. These units are perfect for storing bulk seasonal produce, large cuts of meat, or backup stock that doesn't require frequent access. At Connacht Catering, our commercial chest freezers are built with extra-thick insulation and counterbalanced lids for safety and ease of use. Their horizontal design means they lose very little cold air when opened, making them incredibly energy-efficient. Whether for a small cafe or a large school canteen, a chest freezer provides the most "litres-per-euro" storage value available.
How to Choose the Right Chest Freezers
The main decision is between a "solid lid" for maximum insulation and durability or a "glass lid" for display purposes. If you are storing heavy items, look for a model with a reinforced base and heavy-duty baskets to help with organization. Measure the floor space carefully, ensuring you have enough "overhead" clearance to fully open the lid. Consider a unit with a "Fast Freeze" function, which is useful when you are loading a large amount of room-temperature product into the freezer at once.
Care & Maintenance
-
Manual Defrosting: Most chest freezers require manual defrosting; do this once the ice layer exceeds 5mm to save energy.
-
Drain Plug: Ensure the defrost water drain plug is accessible and clear of debris.
-
Lid Gasket: Keep the lid seal clean to prevent the lid from "freezing shut" due to moisture buildup.
-
Stock Organization: Use a "First In, First Out" (FIFO) system with the baskets to prevent food from being forgotten at the bottom.
